Anatomy of A Caster

How to Choose the Right Caster
Selecting the right caster is much more critical in product development than many manufacturers realize. Not using
the correct casters could mean product failure or possible injury to the user. Know your application and where your
product will be used. Answer the following questions as a guideline.

What is the total load weight the casters are going to support?
Divide the total load, in pounds, by the number of casters you are using and this will give you the load capacity that
is needed per caster, assuming the load is distributed evenly. If not, adjust the load carrying capacity accordingly.
Gleason's load capacities are based on "ideal working conditions", which include reasonably level floors with no
breaks. They are also based on manual, non-motorized use.

What size do you require?
We recommend using the largest wheel possible. The larger the wheel, the easier it is to roll.

What type of surface will these casters be rolling on?
If floor protection or a quiet roll is important then a soft tread wheel should be used. If casters will roll on carpeting,
then hard tread wheels would be preferred. Hard tread wheels are also best where ease of movement is more important than quiet, rolling, floor safety and, applications where loads are infrequently moved.

What type of mounting is needed?
Gleason offers a wide range of plate and post mount casters to meet your design/manufacturing requirements.

Please note: Many other wheel styles and caster combinations are available. Contact Gleason with your needs and we will be happy to help you select a caster or wheel to fit your specific application.
